Top Three Freshman Scores - just imagine what they'll be scoring in their senior year!:

Andrew Walker     4,339
Charly Yoon          3,872
Shane Castro       3,617

One of the great things this year was to see how closely the teams scored with each other.  All the hard work of working together paid off - as you can see by the distribution of rankings in the previous post.   In fact, when you consider the way the teams placed - we did awesomely!

Team Awards:

Team A - 3rd Place in County Overall in Social Science - WOW! Amazing!  That's following right after both Moorpark Team A and B! Coolness!  On a related note... Team A was 4th place in county in Language and Literature... after Moorpark's two teams and Westlake.  Nice work!  Oh , and we were 4th place in county in Music!  Right after Moorpark's two teams and Westlake again! That shows the power we have!  We also came in 5th place in county (as I predicted).  Right on target - you didn't let me down Smiley !

Team B - 2nd place in the County Overall in the Blue Division... and not only that, but in the Blue Division, Team B was in Second Place after Moorpark's Team B in Super Quiz!  Team B was competing against a LOT of schools (more than Team A even):  they were up against - Moorpark, Oak Park, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Rio Mesa, Westlake, Pacifica, Camarillo, Simi Valley, and Channel Islands.   Another tidbit for Team B - they were ranked immediately after Team A in the following events (that means they were the very next highest team to score after our A Team): Art, Essay, and Speech!  Nicely done, Team B!

Team C took Third Place in the Blue Division Super Quiz - right after Moorpark and Team B!  They even beat our own Team A in the Superquiz!  Good work, Team C!  In fact, Team C even tied evenly with Team B for the Language and Literature score.

Team D - with only 4 peeps even managed to squeeze out a victory against Simi Team B and Channel Islands Team B!  Way to go, Team C!

Aside from the medals won in the 10 subject areas (which I will post later)  several of our members won some great other awards!  For example:

Highest Score on an Individual Team:
Dylan Service - Team A
Kevin Chow - Team B
Claudia Grande - Team C
Stanley Ng - Team D

Highest Score in each of the three Divisions (H, S, V):

Dylan Service - Honors
Youri Yoon - Scholastic
Theresa Pia - Varsity

And there is the Team Spirit Awards for great effort, participation, and spirit contribution to holding us all together as a team (like with doughnuts):

Dylan Service - Team A
Youri Yoon - Team B
Paramjit Singh - Team C
Kevin Sgro - Team D

and then we have our Scholarship Winner (MANY thanks to the Lions' Club) of a $500 award towards the college of his destiny:  Matt (Nelson) Nailat!  I know that money will come in handy!

COMMENTARY:

We did great this year!  It was a building year and as such, our teams outshone my expectations!  I had predicted 3 - 5 medals. (Assuming Moorpark would eat up the top three medals in virtually all categories and we'd land a few lucky ones).  Instead, we totalled 6 for the Red Division A Team, 10 for the Blue Division B Team, and 2 for the Blue Division C Team - a beautiful total of 18 medals!  Six TIMES more than I had predicted.    But there was more that I am truly proud of y'all for...

First of all - we fielded a massive team - 30 people!  Setting records for the county and the distric in terms of participation. Most teams (and schools) pick only one or two teams and focus on them - carefully chosen, hand-picked and hand-grown (so to speak).  Other coaches told me I was crazy to try it with 30 students.  But you all, as a group, worked hard and every single one of you did well in some area or another!  From Spirit Awards to Individual Awards - every single person won or was honored for something!  If you read through the lists posted above - you will find that - and it's quite amazing - that every single member of the 30 people on the teams was honored for/did well in/won an award for SOMETHING! Even Shane got his picture in the paper! Go Shane!

Secondly - in the areas we worked on as a group - our efforts paid off.  The areas we focused on in our (lengthy) sessions: Speech, Interview, Art, Music, Social Science, Super Quiz, and Language and Literature were the areas in which we did very well.  So we suck at Math and Econ.  And we need work on our Essay writing.  But it proves that the stuff we worked on AS A TEAM is where we scored highest as a team!

Third and Lastly:  we are young, green, and fresh!  All the other big team contenders are made up of Seniors who have had four years of Math, have already had Econ, and who have had many years of essay writing practice.  For us to do so well, as a brand new team, with no seniors or returnees (except Matt - yay, Matt!), as our first time and as all underclassmen... holy moly!  We Did Great!

Here's the breakdown of the Team Medals!

Okay - we deserve to gloat and be proud.  But we have also got to confront the Hall of Shame.  So, here are the lows of our performance this last semester  Cry

First, let's take a look at the subjective events where it's all about the mood of the judge and not the quality of the work.  Take heart, peeps - you just hit a judge in a bad mood moment.  It can happen to anyone.

Meanest Judge in Essay was suffered by FA.

Cruellest Judge in Speech was inflicted on DH.

Nastiest Jury of Interviewers went to SC.

Then again, in some areas we cannot blame the Judges, we can only blame... the fact that we were not a team of veteran seniors...

Lowest Score in any category:  80/1000 in Math by KS

Lowest Score in Econ: 180/1000 by BG.

Shucks - and after all the hard work we put into those topics....! Then again, maybe a quick glance at our "high" scores in these power areas won't make us feel much better....

Our Resident Math Genius - Calculator Whiz-Kid: Dylan Service: 560/1000 - we all know how much you LOVE math!  Followed closely by....
Jason Lee - Math 480
David Anderson - Math 440

And our top three scores in Econ (how we rule!):
Dylan Service - Economics 480
Kevin Chow - Economics 440
Jose Lepe and Kevin Sgro - Economics 420

(I may mock - but every point helps!  Good job guys... let me just suggest you not major in either topic in college, however...)

Not to be mean, but it must be included in the Hall of Shame:  Lowest Overall Score:  3,617 by SC.  Then again... even that score beat the scores of the two Alternates from two other competing schools - and even beat the B Team from a school in our district - single-handedly!  In spite of that, it was still a counting score which helped the "C" team beat the "A" team in Super Quiz!

But the Real fun comes when we look at our team face-planting in those oh-so special areas....

Worst Point Score for each team in each event:

Team A - Mathematics: 2,280 of 6,000
Team B - Economics: 2,020 of 6,000
Team C - Social Science: 1,693 of 6,000

Worst Relative Ranking among teams in the County by team:

Team A - Ranked #13 (how auspicious) of 30 competing teams in Mathematics.  Beaten by two teams in the White Division and even beaten by an alternate team from Westlake!  Yet, even with all that said - we were still better than half the competing teams!  How ironic - and I had told you all to fill in random numbers!

Team B - Ranked #17 in Mathematics.  Hmmmmm.  You know what all of this Hall of Shame is telling us?  It's telling us we haven't had Calculus yet.  Do you know how badly that makes me feels as your coach?  NOT BAD AT ALL!  Just think... in two years from now....

Team C - Ranked #22 in... can anyone guess?  What's NOT our strong point... You guessed?  Mathematics!  You're Right!  Whooppeee!!  You guessed it!

You know?  The worst we did in any of the areas we actively studied... was  Art... where our A Team came in 7th in county.  Yep - against Moorpark A and B!    And the B team was 8th in county!  Hmmmm... is this supposed to be the Hall of Shame?  I know schools that would be cheering wildly to have gotten 7th or 8th in Art!  That's no shame - not by any means!

Okay - there is the goofiness of Teams B and C beating Team A in Superquiz... but I'm not so sure that's a Hall of Shame item so much as it is a triumph of the B and C teams!  But there is one odd bit... our ranking overall...

Yes - we were NOT #1 in the District.  Camarillo beat us.  How much did they beat us by, you may ask?  Well here's the math:  out of a potential 60,000 points... they beat us by 14 points.  As a percentage that's .0233 %.   No, not 2.3%, I mean .000233  if you are doing it as a whole number.  As in when the average test has 50 questions and is worth 1,000 points, each question is worth 20 points.  That means we lost to Camarillo for the District title by LESS than ONE FREAKIN' QUESTION!  And they were all returning seniors!  (It must be admitted, however, that their coach, Ms. Kip, is awesome and deserved to win!)

Am I ashamed of our loss?  Not at all.  I am really proud of our team.  Even when I tried to make a Hall of Shame posting it turns out we have really nothing to be ashamed of!  I guess I can be ashamed of that:  that I couldn't really find anything for us to be ashamed of.

Darn!
 Grin
Great Job guys!

- B.
