Class Rules
Purpose: This course is designed to enhance students’ study skills and inter-disciplinary knowledge in Music, Art, Literature, Public Speaking and Presentation. Additionally the course is designed to support the OHS Academic Decathlon Team. 6 Subject Tests (305%), Daily Participation (30%), Homework (15%), Activities/Projects (15%), and a Speech Final (10%) will be used to evaluate student achievement (%'s are approximate).
Materials: Students will be issued Academic
Decathlon Basic study guides which will be used as the core texts for the
course. Students will regularly need to bring their study guide packets
to class and must return the guides at the end of the semester. Students
will be responsible for obtaining their own copies of the literature
(selected in the Spring by USAD). Students will
need to regularly bring notebooks (for notes) and pencils (for tests). Additionally, students are required to have
Red Pens with which they will be making corrections on other students’ essays
and work. These are required daily.
Class Rules:
1. Respect for people – students must show respect for other students, the teacher, administrators, substitutes, visitors, and others in the class. Most importantly, students must respect themselves and their ideas.
2. Respect for materials – students must show respect for the property of others and of the school. With the exception of water, food and drink are not allowed in class.
3. Work – Homework must be typewritten. Names must be on papers. Papers without names will not be graded. I do NOT accept late work. For certain portions of study we will work in student teams; it is essential that all members participate in their team assignments as grades for team work will be averaged among all team members' scores.
4. Preparation – Students are expected to be prepared for class, having completed their readings and brought their materials as needed.
5. Class Time – Missed activities due to absences (excused or unexcused) cannot be made up except by extra credit. Attendance may be considered part of a student’s Participation grade in class. Class begins at 3:30 pm and ends at 4:30 pm.
Grading Scale:
Grades will be given on a points-system. Missed assignments and missed tests will count as 0 (zero). Missed tests must be made up through extra credit. (Occasional extra-credit, including occasional make-up tests will be offered infrequently). Students check with team study partners to keep them informed of homework assignments. Transcripts will not note grades above A+. The grading scale is as follows:
A++ 101+ % A+ 97 – 100% A 93 – 96% A- 90 – 92% B+ 87 – 89% B 83 – 86% B- 80 – 82% |
C+ 77 – 79% C 73 – 77% C- 70 – 72% D+ 65 – 69 % D 60 – 64% D- 50 – 59% F less than 50% |
Eligibility for Team Competition:
Students who take the Spring Semester but not the Fall Semester are still eligible to compete on the Academic Decathlon Teams in January and February, however their placement will be determined by their participation and results from the Fall Scrimmage (usually in mid-November).
