One of the best things about teaching is the sheer goofiness of
it all. What follows is a collection of random quotes my student aides and
I have assembled over the years. We try to avoid quoting people who write
answers on their tests that are begging to be silly. The best ones are
deeply revealing of natural confusion, not laziness (didn't do the reading)
attempting to hide under the diversion of cleverness.
Stupid Things my Honors World Civ.
Students Have Written/Said -
Yes, they are the creme-de-la-creme...
but sometimes the creme goes really sour to the point of mildew setting in.
We've tried to purge smartass comments (we get enough of those) and the
remainder is still a revelation.
Stupid Things from American
Government -
And these are the young adults who are
about to go out and vote, making American Democracy the true comedy show that it
is. These words of wisdom from our future leaders shows us one thing: be
afraid.
Stupid Things from Geography
-
Year after year the media publishes
studies which show that American students are ignorant of the world outside the
borders of the US. This site proves such studies wrong. American
students are clearly ignorant of the world INside the borders of the United
States.
Stupid Things I've Said
in Class -
I really didn't say any of these
things. I think my student aides simply wrote them down out of spite when
I was late in paying them for their help grading papers. Please keep that
in mind as you read these things. Certainly if they were remotely true, I
wouldn't publish them on my own self-indulgent web-page, now, would I?
